H M Queen Silvia visited EX-Center

H M Queen Silvia visited the Thalidomide Association of Sweden’s offices & EX-Center!
On Wednesday 5 September 2007 the Red Cross Hospital celebrated its 80th year, and the jubilee was an impressive one. There were several interesting lectures, and the hospital had also managed to be honoured by a visit from H M Queen Silvia.

The Queen was given a guided tour around the hospital, and stopped at the Thalidomide Association of Sweden’s offices & EX-Center. Marie Wikström, EX-Center’s coordinator, took the opportunity to tell about our activities. The Queen had a tight schedule, but nonetheless stayed with us for ten minutes. The staff told her about our activities, what we do, about the Thalidomide Association of Sweden’s new book, and about the Brazil project. Maggan Nyberg, member of the Swedish Thalidomide Society, NGO and one of the founders of the Brazil project, also took part.

H M The Queen was very interested in the Brazil project (she is in fact half Brazilian herself). She did not know that  Thalidomide-affected children are still being born in Brazil and in a few other countries in the world. The Queen expressed concern about the fates of the newly affected children. We were pleased to hear that later that week the President of Brazil, Lula Da Silva, and his wife were due to make a state visit to Sweden. The Queen did us the great honour of asking whether this issue was something she should bring up with the presidential couple during the visit. As this goes to press we hear that the Queen will in fact bring up the Thalidomide question with the President. A report on this will follow.

As a parting gift the Queen accepted an information packet, nicely wrapped with red satin ribbon. It held several examples of the new book, ”Just a little white sleeping pill”, Maja’s book, EX-Center’s brochures, the Thalidomide Association of Sweden’s brochure, information about the Tipbase database, as well as the Brazilian project’s latest application to SHIA [the Swedish Organization  of Persons with Disabilities International Aid Association] with a project description.

In closing, we want to thank the staff and Maggan for giving us such good publicity during the Queen’s visit.
