How do I get to EX-Center?

Here you can find out what you need to do to get a referral to EX-Center.

Are you a resident in Stockholm County Council?

If you have multiple extremity disabilities and live in the Stockholm County Council area, you need no referral. The Red Cross Hospital already has an agreement with the County Council to accept you. Call EX-Center’s coordinator at (08) 791 14 67, and she will help you contact or book an appointment with the orthopaedic doctor, occupational therapist, physical therapist, medical social worker, or psychologist. You may also call or e-mail them directly (see under the heading CONTACT).

Are you a resident of a different county council in Sweden?

If you have multiple extremity disabilities and live outside of the Stockholm area, thus belonging to a different county council, you will need a specialist care referral, in conformity with a national agreement. This means that a specialised doctor in an area such as orthopaedics, hand surgery, or rehabilitation in your home county council must write a specialist care referral to EX-Center. This specialist must belong to a large municipal general hospital or university/regional hospital. In order for your local clinic to accept the payment liability for sending you to EX-Center, the clinic administrator must also approve and sign the referral letter.  There are two possible reasons for specialist care referrals – one is that the referral is for medical reasons and the other is that it is at the request of the patient. In both cases the specialist clinic in your home community is obliged to pay the cost of medical care. If the referral is stated to be for medical reasons they are also obliged to pay for travel, food and lodging.

If you do not already have a contact with an appropriate specialist, you can start out by making an appointment with your family doctor or with a doctor at your local healthcare centre.  He/she can help you by writing a referral to a specialist, as stated above. You’re welcome to call EX-Center’s coordinator at (08) 08-791 14 67; she can give you advice and help on how you should go about it.

It can be useful to take some information brochures about EX-Center to both family doctor and specialist, to help them understand what EX-Center is. You can of course refer to this website or print out the information and take it with you.

Specialist care referral (for medical reasons) covers the costs of:

Travel to and from EX-Center by train, air, or car (with official government mileage allowance).

Food and lodging at EX-Center. Travel to and from airport/train station to lodgings. Also covers trips from the lodgings at Hotel Mörby to the treatment sessions at EX-Center and the return trip. There is, however, a co-payment for each trip. All other trips will be paid for by the patient. If the patient needs to have an assistant for the visit, this should be stated in the specialist care referral.
