Principals

EX-Center is a unique and lasting collaboration on equal terms between a hospital principal and a handicap organization.

EX-Center’s principals are the Red Cross Hospital and the Swedish Thalidomide Society, NGO.

The Red Cross Hospital in Stockholm is the largest rehabilitation hospital in the city. Its primary activity is rehabilitation after orthopaedic and surgical procedures. It also houses an open medical clinic and a physical therapy clinic, occupational therapy, an arm prosthesis unit, a training unit for leg-amputated patients, working life-oriented rehabilitation, a unit for treatment of lymphoedema and an exercise pool.
The hospital is run by a foundation, and has a contract with the county council.

The Swedish Thalidomide Society, NGO was founded in 1962, and is a handicap organization that looks out for the interests of thalidomide-affected persons and those with similar injuries. In the early 1960s about 100 children were born in Sweden with extremity damage caused by the medication called, in English, Thalidomide. The goal of the Swedish Thalidomide Society is to improve the life situations of extremity-disabled people.  This is done by the association’s active involvement in handicap politics, organizing courses and theme events, as well as supporting members in various issues.
