Sepsis

Children and adolescents who were earlier completely healthy can become ill with a spread of meningococcal bacteria to the blood and/or the cerebral membranes over just a few hours.

There are medicines (antibiotics) that are effective against meningococcal bacteria. But despite medical treatment and intensive care, the death rate from this condition is about 10%. The course of the disease is often rapid and dramatic. Of those who survive, about 20% receive lasting injuries such as epilepsy, impaired hearing and other neurological injuries, as well as tissue damage that can require plastic surgery and/or amputation.
